   Automatic Updates Validation Failure

Summary:
You have been re-directed to instructions on how to enable Automatic Updates and configure it to Download and Prompt for installation

Description:
Automatic Updates must be enabled and set to download and prompt for installation on all computers in the dorm network in order to gain internet access.

You are currently being placed in a Temporary Role with limited network access to perform the necessary updates.

Q: What is Automatic Updates?

A: Automatic Updates is a program on your machine that can be configured to check for Critical updates released from Microsoft. In order to gain network access your need to configure Automatic Updates to at least download and prompt to install the updates.

Q: Why do I have to keep installing updates from Microsoft? I just did this last month!!

A: Microsoft usually releases updates on the second Tuesday of every month, some are critical some are not. Critical updates fix vulnerabilities that are often exploited and the cause of some of the worst viruses on the net.

Q: Why can't I take care of installing updates manually?

A: From our experience this issue was not being addressed by an adequate number of users. As a result, unsuspecting machines were often hijacked and used to propagate viruses and Denial of Service (DoS) attacks.

Please complete the following to enable Automatic updates on your Windows XP machine:

  1. Click Start, (If you use the classic Start Menu, click Settings), then click Control Panel.

  2. Click Performance and Maintenance.

Tip: If the Performance and Maintenance category is not visible, click Switch to Category View.

  3. Click System.
  4. Click the Automatic Updates tab.
  5. Lindenwood suggests you select Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them. For greater security select Automatic (the top option) and choosing a time when you would like the automatic installation to take place.

  6. Click Apply to confirm your setting. Return to the Network Login screen. Click the Next button at the bottom of the page. If you meet all other network requirements, you will be granted network access. If there are other requirements you do not meet, you will be given instructions on what you need to do.
  7. You will be notified when new updates are available from Microsoft. Please install them on a regular basis.
