Former Associate Circuit Judge Joins Faculty

Alexis Otis-Lewis, former associate circuit judge for the State of Illinois, will join the faculty of Lindenwood University-Belleville starting Jan. 17. Otis-Lewis will take on the role of assistant professor for the LCIE criminal justice program and act as an advisor for students enrolled in evening classes.

“I was first attracted to Lindenwood Belleville because I wanted to be involved in the community,” said Otis-Lewis. “I wanted to be on the ground floor of something positive for both Lindenwood University and the city of Belleville."

With 17 years of experience on the bench, Otis-Lewis has built up an extensive background in law. From 1992 to 2009, she served as the presiding and trial judge of the Illinois Court’s Family Division, in which she heard cases involving small claims, felony, family, child support, and various civil matters, such as administrative appeals from government agencies.

In the early 1990s, Otis-Lewis practiced law through her own private firm and served as a general practitioner in state and federal court. Her law background also includes work as a prosecutor in the St. Clair County States’ Attorney’s Office and a pro se law clerk for the United States District Court in East St. Louis. Otis-Lewis is a member of the Illinois and Missouri Bar Association and holds a law license in both states as well.

“We are excited to welcome Judge Otis-Lewis to the Lindenwood Belleville family,” said Dr. Paige Mettler-Cherry, dean of academics at the university. “Her eagerness to share her knowledge of the criminal justice system and prepare students for a career in their desired field makes her an important addition to our faculty.”

Otis-Lewis earned her bachelor’s degree in child development at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, her Masters degree in counseling at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, and her Juris Doctorate at Washington University School of Law.

“I look forward to working with the students and guiding them to complete their degrees at Lindenwood Belleville,” Otis-Lewis said.
