Focused Nonfiction Workshop IV:
Writing a Nonfiction Book

Instructor: Tony D'Souza

Class Type: Workshop with readings

Course Description: The most vibrant and lucrative commercial market for books is nonfiction. Nonfiction books become bestsellers, reach wide audiences, and are turned into blockbuster films and streaming TV series. Readers seem to gravitate toward the phrase 'based on a true story.' So how does a writer go about the seemingly Herculean task of gathering all the research, conducting interviews and checking facts that go into the production and writing of a nonfiction book? The open secret is, sometimes you don't have to! In this course, we will examine three types of nonfiction books that have all become bestsellers. One is research-based historical nonfiction, one is contemporary interview-driven nonfiction, and one is a long personal essay. In this course, we will also workshop your own nonfiction writing. Have an idea for a nonfiction book or just want to give the genre a closer look? Welcome to this introduction into nonfiction book writing and the nonfiction book marketplace.
