BSC 390xx Special Topics: Evolution, Darwin and the Galapagos Islands

This course will consist of reading and online discussion of “Voyage of the Beagle” and “Origin of Species”, to be followed by a study abroad trip to the Galapagos Islands.  We will be discussing how Charles Darwin came to develop his theory of evolution by natural selection while serving as ship’s naturalist on the HMS Beagle, and why his visit to the Galapagos Islands on the journey had such a profound effect on Darwin’s views.   Students will keep a daily field journal while visiting the Galapagos, documenting environmental variables and species encountered.
