ESC 39002 Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca: exploring community cultural wealth, sustainability, and resilience

This course introduces Lindenwood University students to Peruvian pre-Columbian and modern communities, their cultural wealth, sustainability and resilience, and their adaptation to environmental hardship. Students will explore through class assignments, discussions and on ground experiences the traditions of indigenous communities, their heritage, and the imprint that conquest and colonialism left on their culture.  During this trip students will have the opportunity to explore and learn about various Peruvian landmarks including Machu Picchu and Ollantaytambo, Inca archaeological sites; the, Uros Floating islands and Isla Taquile in Late Titicaca (the highest navigable lake in the world), and Spanish Colonial religious and administration buildings. Machu Picchu, and the center of the Inca Empire, is a testament to environmental adaptation, and engineering and architectural achievement; it is a “…well-planned distribution of functions within space, territory control, and social, productive, religious and administrative organization … (UNESCO)”. In addition, students will experience and explore the physical environment of the Peru, from the highlands to the rainforest, including its rouged topography and water availability and distribution, and learn how, despite some of these challenging conditions, these resilient communities have been able to flourish since pre-Columbian times.  Students will engage in a service learning opportunity hosted by one of local communities.
