Many active members of the U.S. Armed Forces and military veterans are taking their education to the next level by earning an undergraduate or graduate degree that will help them earn a promotion in rank, a commission, or start them on a new career path. Many colleges label themselves “military friendly,” but what should you consider when looking for a school that is truly dedicated to military members?
What a University Should Offer Military Members
Be sure that the university you enroll in is committed to meeting your needs as a member of the military through a financial, educational, and general support structure.
- If you’ve served on active duty for 90 or more days since September 10, 2001, based on length of service, the Post 9/11 GI Bill provides you with education benefits that can be used to pay for an accredited college education. Remember that the GI Bill will pay up to 100 percent of in-state public school tuition depending on your time of service as determined by VA certifying officials.
Now, look for a college or university that:
- Is a proud member of the Yellow Ribbon Program. This program is used to help service members make up for any tuition and fees that are not covered by the Post 9/11 GI Bill. If you plan to attend a private school or a school where you are a non-resident, the Yellow Ribbon Program can be used to pay up to 100 percent of these extra fees. That means that, if you meet the qualifications as outlined by the Veterans Administration, your tuition and expenses can be completely free!
- Staffs offices and/or Veterans Affairs Centers. These offices should be dedicated solely to assisting military service members with benefits and admissions questions, financial aid and enrollment requirements, and graduation terms.
- Utilizes both traditional classrooms and online coursework. Many military members work varying hours, which previously has made it difficult for them to earn a degree and advance their careers. Many schools now offer online coursework, certifications, and degrees through programs that are accessible 24 hours a day and are taught by the same campus faculty members that teach traditional classes.
