Course Description

This course will examine the literary form of novel-in-stories by examining three novels—Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout, Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo, and the classic Winesburg, Ohio by Sherwood Anderson. We’ll discuss each individual “story” in the book, and then the book as a whole—what unifies the “stories” in the book to tell an overall story in the novel tradition as opposed to a collection—as well as the nuanced differences (and similarities) between novels, novels-in-stories and short story collections.
