Course Description

Poems of Place: The Thai Nirat Poem

Writers of the travel memoir, the social commentary, and the love poem will find common ground in the Thai nirat poem: a form that expresses longing for an absent lover while away on a journey, while also recounting other experiences along the way.

In this combination literature and workshop class, students will learn and experiment with the conventions of the traditional nirat, which include wordplay and extended metaphors. They will also have the opportunity to produce workshopped pieces in either prose or verse.

This class was designed as an extension of “Emphasis on Asian Poetries,” but students without any previous background in Thai poetry are welcome to join. All readings will be in English or English translation.
