Musical Mentor Program Developed with Belleville Youth Symphony

Lindenwood University-Belleville recently established a Musical Mentor Program in association with the Belleville Youth Symphony, which kicked off Jan. 28 with Sectional Day hosted on the campus.

“I am so excited to launch this program because it allows our students one more opportunity to become engrained within the music world while offering them leadership opportunities, which I think reaffirms their commitment to being a musician,” said Angelina McLaughlin-Heil, coordinator of the Lindenwood music program.

The Musical Mentor Program, which was developed by McLaughlin-Heil alongside Brian Kappler, coordinator of the Lindenwood Drumline, matches Lindenwood music students with members of the Belleville Youth Orchestra so that the university students have opportunity to instruct and bond with younger musicians. During the Sectional Day, Lindenwood students assisted the orchestra’s sectional coaches with teaching 32 members of the youth orchestra.

“Having the opportunity to be an instructor gives my students space to not only exercise the art of instruction, but it enmeshes them with the musical community throughout the Metro East,” said McLaughlin-Heil. “That helps my students reflect on their own ability and their dedication to and mastery of their instruments.”

Lindenwood students who are participating in the program include Cassidy Mundwiller, flautist, Wentzville, Mo.; Allyson Biehl, saxophonist, Red Bud, Ill.; Ashton Corcoran, trumpeter, De Soto, Mo.; and Charles (CJ) Metheny, percussionist, Troy, Ill.

“No other university in the St. Louis or Metro East area has a mentor program with a local youth symphony group,” said McLaughlin-Heil. “This partnership makes a positive community impact and elevates the kinds of academic and co-curricular opportunities we offer our students.”
