GIS: Bridging the gap between STEM and STEAM.
The GIS in the Classroom workshops are designed for any K-12 educator looking to incorporate quality hands-on problem-solving digital tools into their classroom whether they are teaching 4th grade history or 12th grade environmental science.
No prior experience with geographic information systems is required.
Each 2 week online course is designed to give educators a functional GIS skillset and confidence with the Esri ArcGIS products to get them on the fast-track to teaching with the technologies in their classroom. Emphasis is not on teaching the button clicks of GIS, but on using the GIS toolset as a way to analyze, capture, visualize, and communicate lessons and projects for student learning and engagement.
Courses
The Geo Inquiry Process - Getting Started with GIS Tech {GISPRO}
GIS technologies are only as good as the questions asked them - educators in this class will learn the National Geographic Geo-Inquiry process: Ask, Collect, Visualize, Create, Act.
Educators will learn about the administration side of their ArcGIS Online Organization and how to navigate the details involved in getting their class GIS enabled.
GIS Mapping in the Field {GISMAP}
Educators in this course will learn to collect spatial data and design classroom projects using the moblie apps Survey123 and ArcGIS Field Maps.
Survey123 is a configurable app within the ArcGIS online suite. This app is survey centric with a locational component. It is a great tool for getting students outside and thinking about data that can be easily collected at a point location. It also affords many lessons related to reading graphs and data.
GIS Data Visualization {GISVIS}
Story Maps have been a game changer both in my own classroom and for my students. They provide a wonderful format to communicate lessons in a digestible format on desktops, phones, and tablets. Their interactive nature combining text, pictures, and maps keeps students engaged with the material! Not to mention the fact that they can be created intuitively using the Story Map builder. Get students thinking critically while practicing their communication skills through graphic design and storytelling. Lessons abound from outlining, collecting images/pictures, content creation, narrative writing, and source citation.
