First Year Undergraduate Student Online Course Limit

Purpose

Student success and student satisfaction data from internal data collection and the Student Satisfaction Inventory show a marked decrease in academic success and university satisfaction for in person students who take courses primarily online. This disparity is most pronounced within first year traditional undergraduate students.

Through reducing the number of online courses in which first time students are permitted to enroll, this policy seeks to connect students with vital success resources to develop impactful, lasting relationships and student habits.

Scope

This policy applies to all first time traditional undergraduate students.

Policy

1. Students admitted as first time traditional undergraduate students are limited to taking two fully online classes per semester during their first two standard terms of enrollment.
2. Students who have a verifiable reason to request an exception to this policy should coordinate with their academic advisor to submit a Petition for Policy Exemption to their College’s Dean.
3. International Students or students using VA benefits may have further restrictions upon their online course enrollment and should confer with the appropriate office for additional information.
