Individual Awards
Each year at the Honors Convocation, Lindenwood University bestows awards on students who exhibit leadership, high academic performance, and professional promise. These awards recognize high achieving individuals in the various academic and professional disciplines as well as the visual and performing arts of music, dance, and theatre. Special recognition is also given to students who combine athletic skill with high academic achievement.
ALPHA CHI
Alpha Chi is a national college honor society that admits students from all academic disciplines. Membership is limited to the top 10 percent of an institution’s juniors, seniors, and graduate students.
ALPHA DELTA SIGMA
Alpha Delta Sigma (ADS) is the national honor society sponsored by the American Advertising Federation (AAF) that recognizes and encourages scholastic achievement in advertising studies. It is the only national professional advertising honor society in American higher education.
ALPHA LAMBDA DELTA
Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society recognizes those senior students in the adult evening programs who have achieved academic excellence while handling other life responsibilities, including family, work, and community service. Nominees must have completed 84 credit hours at Lindenwood University and maintained a 3.8 cumulative grade point average.
KAPPA DELTA PI
The international society in education recognizes juniors, seniors, and graduate students who demonstrate high academic achievement, a commitment to education as a career, and potential for leadership in the field of education.
KAPPA PI KAPPA
Kappa Pi Kappa is an international honorary art fraternity for outstanding students of art, design, and art history majors at the undergraduate level. Its purpose is to reward scholastic and artistic achievement and encourage collegiality among the arts on campus and beyond.
PI SIGMA ALPHA
The national honor society Pi Sigma Alpha stimulates “scholarship and intelligent interest in political science.” The Lindenwood chapter was founded in 1999 and is extended to juniors, seniors, graduate students, and faculty members. Students must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 in political science and a 3.0 overall average and must have completed at least 10 hours of political science coursework.
PSI CHI
Psi Chi is an international honor society whose purpose shall be to encourage, stimulate, and maintain excellence in scholarship of the individual members in all fields, particularly in psychology, and to advance the science of psychology.
SIGMA TAU DELTA
Sigma Tau Delta is the international English honors society. Sigma Tau Delta’s “central purpose is to confer distinction for high achievement to students of the English language and literature.” The organization was re-founded at Lindenwood University in 2014.
BERTHA FLOYD LIFELONG LEARNING AWARD
This award recognizes high scholarship and the zealous pursuit of leadership and community service by a female student engaged in degree-oriented lifelong learning. It is named in memory of the mother of Charlsie Floyd, former Community Relations Director at Lindenwood.
SCHOENHARD AMERICAN HERITAGE AWARD
This award recognizes outstanding achievement in the study of American values and character education as practiced through programs at Lindenwood University. This award is made possible by William and Kate Schoenhard. Mr. Schoenhard is a former member of the Lindenwood University Board of Trustees.
RYAN GUFFEY INTERNATIONAL STUDENT AWARD
This award is given to an international student who has shown exemplary academic achievement and made exceptional contributions to campus life at Lindenwood. It is named in honor of Dr. Ryan Guffey, former Associate Vice President for Global Affairs.
THE ROSE LYN ZANVILLE LEADERSHIP AND CHARACTER AWARD
This award is for a student in interdisciplinary studies who has contributed to the field of international and global studies by demonstrating excellence in leadership and character, producing an empirical research study in the fields of leadership and ethics, or developing a leadership and character initiative to make a difference. The award is given in honor of Rose Lyn Zanville, Ph.D., by her sister Holly Zanville, Ph.D., both graduates of Lindenwood College for Women.
ROBERT AND GWENDOLYN FEUERBACHER GREEK CHARACTER AND SERVICE AWARD
This award is given to fraternal men and women who have shown exemplary dedication to their brothers and sisters and who embody the ideals of honor, loyalty, leadership, and service to the university and the community. It is named in honor of Robert and Gwendolyn Feuerbacher, who uphold Greek principles and standards both regionally and nationally.
LINDENWOOD STUDENT GOVERNMENT PRESIDENT AWARD
This award recognizes the leadership and contributions of the president of the Lindenwood Student Government.
EASTON AWARD
This award, named in honor of Lindenwood University founder Mary Easton Sibley, is given to a senior who exhibits exemplary academic achievement by successfully pursuing intellectual challenges in their coursework and extracurricular activities.
SIBLEY AWARD
This award, named in honor of Lindenwood University founder George C. Sibley, is given to a senior who demonstrates strong leadership and service to the university and community while maintaining a record of academic excellence.
College Awards
HARMON RELIGION AWARD
This award recognizes academic excellence in the study of religion. This award is named in honor of the Rev. Dr. Lloyd B. Harmon, father of the late Lindenwood University Board Chairman Raymond Harmon and Professor Emerita Jeanne Harmon Huesemann. Dr. Harmon was a longtime chaplain and professor of religion at Lindenwood.
JAMES MAGEE II AWARD
The student selected for the annual scholarship will major in and work toward a career in the performing arts. The James Magee II Memorial Scholarship honors the memory of James Magee II, a Lindenwood student from the class of 1988 who majored in the performing arts.
JEAN FIELDS WRITING AWARD
This award is named in memory of Jean Fields, who taught English at Lindenwood. It is presented to the freshman whose essay or creative writing is judged by the English faculty to be the best of the year.
JR STRZELEC HONORS AWARD IN MUSICAL THEATRE
This award is given to the undergraduate or graduate student who demonstrates outstanding work in the field of musical theatre and serves as a mentor and inspiration to other musical theatre students.
LECTRA CORPORATION FASHION DESIGN AWARD
This honor goes to the student who has exhibited the most outstanding creative and academic talent and exceptional promise in the field of fashion design. This award is named for the Lectra Corporation in recognition of its significant $3 million donation of state-of-the-art industry software.
LEDELL BITZER COMMUNICATIONS AWARD
This award is given to the senior who demonstrates outstanding academic performance and distinguished service in department activities. Mrs. Ledell Bitzer established this award. Her late husband, Ralph, was a communications attorney who represented KCLC during its power increase from 10 watts to 1,500 watts in the 1960s.
LINDA L. ROSS CREATIVE WRITING AWARD
This award, named in honor of Lindenwood alumna Linda Ross, is given to the sophomore, junior, or senior whose work in poetry, fiction, or drama is judged by the Lindenwood English faculty to be the best submitted.
MARTHA BOYER RADIO AWARD
This award is given to a graduating senior for dedicated service to KCLC as well as for outstanding academic performance. It is named in memory of the esteemed professor who established the KCLC broadcast facilities in 1948 and retired in 1972.
MFA WRITING AWARD
This award recognizes an outstanding piece of creative work produced by a student in the MFA in Writing program during the current academic year—work that demonstrates precise and vivid use of language, as well as fresh approaches and mastery of the genre’s craft.
PHI ALPHA THETA HISTORY AWARD
This award is presented to an outstanding history major, chosen not only for academic excellence but also for contributions to the History Department and to Lindenwood University.
PI SIGMA ALPHA AWARD
This award is given to the student who achieves high academic success, combined with service to the community.
PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION AWARD
This award is given to the graduating senior with the highest GPA in public administration.
RUFUS EASTON INTERNATIONAL PEACE AND SUSTAINABILITY AWARD
Named for the father of Lindenwood founder Mary Easton Sibley, this award recognizes academic excellence in the field of International Relations.
SPANISH AWARD
This award recognizes academic excellence in the study of the Spanish language and its rich worldwide cultural and literary heritage, together with the recipient’s enthusiastic support of the Spanish program and its extra-curricular activities.
THE HOWARD BARNETT ESSAY AWARD
The Howard Barnett Essay Award: Open to students majoring in English and currently at the sophomore level or above. This award goes to the student who, in the judgment of the English faculty, has written the best essay of the year.
THEATRE AWARD
This award is given to the student who exhibits dedication to all aspects of the Theatre Department and has maintained a consistently outstanding grade point average in all subject areas throughout his or her academic career.
VIDEO AWARD
This award is given for outstanding academic performance and dedicated and distinguished service in video production.
ALVIN M. FRANCIS AWARD IN EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP
This award is given to a first-generation graduate student from rural roots. The student receiving this award has consistently demonstrated leadership traits of good character, including honesty, wisdom, fairness, vision, creativity, approachability, academic competency, and administrative excellence. The Alvin M. Francis family established this award to honor the memory of Alvin M. Francis, a professional administrator, who held up the belief that rank does not confer privilege or give power, but imposes an awesome responsibility on those who have been blessed with the opportunity to lead.
BEHAVIOR ANALYSIS AWARD
This award recognizes academic scholars who generate peer-reviewed research. They are leaders in their class and have contributed novel work in the professional field of behavior analysis.
DOROTHY DOYLE LIBRARY SCIENCE AWARD
This award is given to the graduate student in library science who has demonstrated outstanding achievement or potential as a school librarian. Dorothy Doyle, a retired school librarian, is the benefactor of this award.
FRANCIS AND ELIZABETH HUSS GRADUATE AWARD IN EDUCATION ADMINISTRATION
This award is given to the graduate student who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, leadership, and potential as a professional school administrator. Dr. Francis Huss, a retired educator, and Mrs. Elizabeth Huss, a life member of the Lindenwood University Board of Trustees, are benefactors of this award.
GENEVIEVE FLOWERS ELEMENTARY EDUCATION AWARD
This award is given for service to the School of Education and the university, involvement in education activities, and potential as a professional educator. Duane Flowers, a former member of the Lindenwood University Board of Trustees, established this award in honor of his mother, a retired teacher.
LARRY DOYLE OUTSTANDING DOCTORAL STUDENT IN EDUCATIONAL ADMINISTRATION HONORS AWARD
This award, given for service to the School of Education and the university, is awarded to a doctoral student who has achieved high levels of academic success. Dr. Doyle, a professional educator and former professor in the Lindenwood School of Education, established this award.
LARRY DOYLE SECONDARY EDUCATION AWARD
This award is given for service to the School of Education and the university, involvement in education activities, and potential as a professional educator. Dr. Larry Doyle, a professional educator and former professor in the Lindenwood School of Education, established this award.
LIGHTHOUSE CONSULTING DOCTOR OF EDUCATION IN ADMINISTRATION AWARD
This award is given to an outstanding graduate of the Doctor in Education program who has demonstrated superior leadership in the educational field. Dr. Larry Doyle, professional educator, established this award.
LOIS A. EVANS GIFTED EDUCATION AWARD
This honor is conferred upon the graduate student who exhibits the most outstanding ability to merge conceptual intelligence and creativity in the design of learning experiences or curricula for academically gifted students. Former Lindenwood President James D. Evans established this award in honor of his wife, a former teacher and specialist in gifted education.
NANCY POLETTE EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION AWARD
This award is given for service to the School of Education and the university, involvement in education activities, and potential as a professional educator. Paul Polette established this award in honor of his wife, Nancy, who has more than 50 years of experience as a professional educator.
PROFESSIONAL COUNSELING AWARD (CLINICAL MENTAL HEALTH)
This award recognizes high scholarship, leadership, and community service in the field of professional counseling.
RICHARD AND KAREN BOYLE SPECIAL EDUCATION AWARD
This award is given for service to the School of Education and the university, involvement in education activities, and potential as a professional educator in special education. Dr. Richard Boyle, a professional educator and former vice president for human resources and dean of faculty at Lindenwood University, and his wife, Karen, a former special education teacher and counselor in the Fort Zumwalt School District, established this award.
SCHOOL COUNSELING
This award recognizes high scholarship, leadership, and community service in the field of school counseling.
SOCIAL WORK AWARD
This award recognizes a student who has demonstrated superlative academic achievement and leadership in social work.
SUE SPELLMANN GRADUATE AWARD IN EDUCATION
This award is given to the graduate student who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, leadership, and potential as a professional educator. Former Lindenwood University President Dennis Spellmann established this award in honor of his wife, a distinguished teacher.
ATHLETIC TRAINING STUDENT LEADERSHIP AWARD
This award is given to an outstanding student majoring in athletic training who has demonstrated a commitment to the field, through their education, leadership, service, and future goals. Selection will be by the faculty and based on the following: program GPA, clinical evaluations, internships, volunteer activities, BOC certification, and plans to work as an athletic trainer.
BIOLOGY AWARD
The award is given to the student who has demonstrated the most outstanding scholarship, student leadership, example, and interest in the scholarly pursuits in biology.
C.W. STEWART COMPUTER SCIENCE AWARD
This award is given to an outstanding student majoring in computer science who has demonstrated a high degree of skill and understanding of the subject.
CHARLOTTE G. EVANS PSYCHOLOGY AWARD
This award is given to the student who has significantly contributed to facilitating interest in psychology through leadership, selection of events, and promotion of psychological activities. Dr. James D. Evans, former president and professor of psychology at Lindenwood, established this award in honor of his mother.
CHEMISTRY AWARD
This award is given to the top scholar in chemistry who has demonstrated potential for future contributions to the discipline.
CSTH UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLAR AWARD
This award recognizes an undergraduate student who has made significant achievements in their professional development as a research scholar. The recipient of this award will be a student who has significantly contributed to all aspects of scholarly production.
DR. RAO AYYAGARI RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP IN CELL BIOLOGY/GENETICS
This research stipend is given to a senior biology major with a 3.5 or higher GPA who will be doing independent research in cell biology or genetics within the Biological Sciences Program at the St. Charles Campus of Lindenwood University. The award was established by former Professor Dr. Rao Ayyagari.
EXERCISE SCIENCE STUDENT LEADERSHIP AWARD
This award is given to the exercise science major who demonstrates outstanding leadership in and out of the classroom.
GRADUATE SCHOLAR AWARD
This award is given to an outstanding graduate student who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and achievement in the area of research and/or scholarly work.
HEALTH PROMOTION AND PROGRAMMING AWARD
This award recognizes a junior or senior who has demonstrated excellent academic performance and potential in designing and facilitating programs that promote healthy lifestyles.
JANE ADDAMS COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AWARD
This award is given to a sociology major with a respectable GPA, who is active in the community (campus or at large) and/or working towards social change.
JESSE BERNARD ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP AWARD
This scholarship is funded by former Lindenwood professors Dr. Ray Scupin and Dr. Michael Stein and is named in memory of Jessie Bernard, a world-renowned sociologist, who was a sociology faculty member at Lindenwood from 1940-1946. The recipient must be a junior or senior full-time residential student and be a student of exceptional quality in the field of sociology with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
JOE AND NORA KILLIAN PHYSICAL EDUCATION AWARD
This award is given for service to the Physical Education Department and the university, involvement in physical education activities, and potential as a professional educator. Richard Boyle, former vice president and dean of faculty, and his wife, Karen, established this award in honor of Karen’s parents.
LEROY E. EVANS MATHEMATICS AWARD
This award recognizes outstanding achievement and academic excellence in the study of mathematics. The award was established by Dr. James D. Evans, former president of Lindenwood University, in honor of his father.
MAX WEBER EXCELLENCE IN SOCIOLOGY AWARD
This award recognizes the graduating senior majoring in sociology with the highest GPA.
OUTSTANDING PARAMEDICINE STUDENT AWARD
The recipient of this award is selected by fellow students in the Paramedicine program. The student must demonstrate excellence as a paramedicine student, serve as a role model for other students, and assist other students to be successful.
PRE-PROFESSIONAL AWARD
This award is given to the student who has demonstrated the most outstanding scholarship, student leadership, and potential for future contributions in his or her chosen profession.
PSYCHOLOGY AWARD
This award is given to a student who excels in his/her studies and is dedicated to the practice of the psychology profession as a service to others.
PUBLIC HEALTH STUDENT LEADERSHIP AWARD
This award is given to a student who possesses a collaborative spirit and is a positive team member, has a strong grasp of Public Health concepts and application, demonstrates leadership qualities in and out of the classroom, has effective communication skills with colleagues, faculty, and community partners, possesses awareness of diverse populations and needs, and demonstrates maturity.
ROBERT MULOCK ENVIRONMENTAL BIOLOGY/EARTH SCIENCE AWARD
This award is given to a student who has demonstrated leadership and scholarly interest in the conservation and environmental sciences.
T.R. HUGHES CRIMINAL JUSTICE AWARD
This award recognizes a student who demonstrates humanitarian principles toward others, strives for excellence in all endeavors, and seeks to advance professionalism and just ideals within the criminal justice system. This award was established by St. Charles business leader Thomas R. Hughes, former member of the Lindenwood University Board of Directors.
THE EDITH ZANVILLE FRONTIERS OF SCIENCE HONORS AWARD
This award is presented to the female student who has most demonstrated the utmost imagination and intellectual curiosity in writing about science, technology, and the future. Drs. Holly and Rose Lyn Zanville (LC ‘68 and ‘66) and Harry Zanville, JD (Westminster ’70), established this award in honor of their mother.
UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT LEADERSHIP IN RECREATION AWARD
This award recognizes the student majoring in a recreation field who contributes through selfless service and a commitment to helping others.
ALEXA PRESSLEY ADVERTISING AWARD
The award is given to a graduating senior who has demonstrated outstanding academic performance and potential as a professional in the field of advertising
BEASON AWARD FOR ACCOUNTING
This award is given to a senior in business studies who demonstrates outstanding work in the field of accounting. Former member of the Lindenwood University Board of Trustees Duane Flowers and his wife, Linda, established this award.
CREOLE U. FLOWERS AWARD IN FINANCE
This award recognizes an outstanding senior studying in the field of finance. Duane Flowers, former member of the Lindenwood University Board of Trustees and his wife, Linda, established this award in memory of Duane’s father.
DELTA SIGMA PI SCHOLARSHIP KEY
This award honors the senior student or students who have achieved the highest cumulative academic grade point toward a degree in a business administration discipline. This award is presented by the Lindenwood University Sigma Psi Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi, a national co-educational professional business fraternity.
GEORGE L. AND MARIE E. WEAVER HONORS AWARD
This award recognizes outstanding achievement and potential as a professional in the field of business. The award was established by George and Marie Weaver.
JOSEPH G. MATHEWS SALES AND MARKETING AWARD
This award honors academic accomplishments, professional promise, and scholarly activities in the fields of business, marketing, and sales. Mr. Mathews, a member of the Lindenwood University Board of Trustees, established this award in the memory of his granddaughter, Mariah Sights Mathews.
LIGHTHOUSE MBA HONORS AWARD
This award is given to the outstanding student in the Master of Business Administration program who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and achievement in the study of business and related fields.
MUELLER GRADUATE AWARD IN HEALTH MANAGEMENT
This award is given to the graduate student who has demonstrated achievement in health management. This award was established by Julie M. Mueller, Lindenwood’s former vice president for operations and finance and chief operating officer.
NORMAN F. ACKERMANN AWARD FOR ACADEMIC AND COMMUNITY EXCELLENCE
This award is given to an undergraduate non-traditional student who has junior or senior academic rank. The award is based on GPA, community service, and overall support and attitude regarding Lindenwood University.
OTTO-JANSSEN FAMILY HUMAN RESOURCE AWARD
This award is given to recognize and honor academic achievement and personal excellence in the study and practice of human resource management.
THE PALS STUDENT ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR AWARD
This award honors academic accomplishments and professional potential as an entrepreneur. Mrs. Anne Pals, alumna and former member of the Lindenwood University Board of Trustees, and Mr. Harlan Pals, businessman and community leader, established this award.
THE ROBERT AND PAULINE HAMMEN LIFELONG LEARNING AWARD
This award recognizes high scholarship and the zealous pursuit of leadership and community service and is awarded to the outstanding male student engaged in degree-oriented lifelong learning. It is named in memory of Pauline Hammen, former longtime office manager of the ADP program, and her husband Robert.
