At Lindenwood, AI readiness is not a course you take, it’s how you learn.  By fall 2027, every academic program will have achieved full AI integration through a deliberate, three-touchpoint framework, ensuring every graduate leaves prepared for an AI-enabled workforce.

Integration, Not Addition

Many colleges and universities are responding to AI by bolting on additional AI-specific coursework or certificates. Lindenwood is taking a different path: our starting premise is not whether to engage AI, it’s how. Rather than adding something alongside each program, we’re embedding AI readiness within the existing curriculum, asking how AI can help students more fully realize the knowledge, skills, and purpose already at the heart of their discipline.

The Three Touchpoints

1. Foundational Touchpoint, Functional AI Literacy: In a general education or gateway course within their major, students develop fluency with the AI tools relevant to their field.
2. Early/Mid-Program Touchpoint, Human-Centered Ethical AI Literacy: As students progress into their major, they develop the habits of mind and practices necessary for responsible, accountable use. Human-centered AI use means knowing when a decision needs a person, not a prediction. Students learn to treat AI as a tool that informs their thinking and creative practice, never as a substitute for it.
3. Capstone Touchpoint, Disciplinary AI Literacy: By the capstone or an equivalent advanced experience, students meaningfully engage with AI’s effects on their field’s evolving methods, materials, and career pathways, building the professional capacity and judgment they’ll carry with them into the workforce.

Lindenwood’s Niche: Human-Centered AI

Lindenwood recognized early on what AI would mean for higher education; it began offering dedicated programming in 2023, building on its distinct philosophy from the beginning, which is that AI should enhance human judgment, creativity, and decision-making, not replace it.

The human-centered approach serves as our foundation for all our AI curricular initiatives.  Our growing suite of dedicated Human-Centered AI opportunities put this philosophy into practice at the program level.  Our AI-ready curricular initiative extends that same philosophy university-wide, embedding ethical, human-centered AI literacy into every academic program on campus.

AI Readiness Beyond the Classroom

Lindenwood’s expertise in human-centered AI extends beyond academic programs and into organizations navigating digital transformation. Drs. James Hutson and Daniel Plate have worked with industry partners, municipalities, and other organizations to assess AI readiness, identify opportunities and barriers to adoption, develop responsible-use policies and governance frameworks, and provide organization-wide AI training. Rather than approaching AI as a single technology purchase, their work examines the people, processes, policies, and skills necessary for successful adoption. Readiness assessments can help organizations understand where AI can create meaningful value, where human judgment must remain central, and what employees need to use emerging tools responsibly and effectively.

Lindenwood’s AI expertise also has an international reach. Through U.S. Department of State engagements, Dr. Hutson has represented this work abroad, presenting in South Korea on artificial intelligence and the future of education; in Phuket, Thailand, on AI, innovation, and entrepreneurship; and in Astana, Kazakhstan, on digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and the changing landscape of finance. These engagements bring Lindenwood’s human-centered approach to conversations with educators, entrepreneurs, business leaders, and other professionals around the world, while bringing global perspectives on AI transformation back to the University and its students.
