For the fifth year in a row, the American Legion Auxiliary Missouri Girls State and American Legion Boys State of Missouri will welcome high school students from across the state to Lindenwood University’s campus. In addition to hands-on activities, students will learn from a series of speakers that include prominent political, athletic, and advocacy leaders.
“We are thrilled to welcome these tremendous students and staff members to St. Charles for a week of learning and civic engagement,” Lindenwood President Dr. John R. Porter said. “These programs reflect the same values as Lindenwood, like thriving together and doing what is right.”
Operating in line with Lindenwood’s mission, students attending the event learn from real experience. Known as “citizens” for the week, the students form their own government, electing candidates who participate in a mock legislature. Citizens also sit in on a Missouri Court of Appeals case. These activities introduce students to legislative and judicial processes while giving them a firsthand look at the rights and responsibilities of an American citizen. This year’s speakers include political correspondent Tara Palmeri, New York Jets quarterback Brady Cook, Senator Joe Manchin, Governor Mike Kehoe, and Martin Luther King III.
Hosting Missouri Girls State and Boys State of Missouri reinforces Lindenwood as a destination for community involvement and experiential learning. Through the partnership, the University provides future leaders with an early connection to the Lindenwood experience while supporting programs that strengthen communities throughout Missouri.
