Professor Jon Grant Hargate Receives 2020 Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award

By Amanda May

Professor Jon Grant Hargate of the School of Arts, Media, and Communications recently received the 2020 Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award. He is one of nearly 100 teachers within the St. Louis metropolitan area to be recognized with this special award. Sponsored by the Emerson Electric company, this annual award is given to teachers across all grade levels who showcase excellence within their field. To be considered for this award, teachers must be nominated by their chief administrators.

Professor Hargate learned of the award at last spring’s full faculty meeting. He said he was “very surprised and humbled” to have received the award, which includes a designated parking spot, from President John Porter, a glass apple trophy, and special recognition by colleagues.

Professor Hargate has been a teacher for 38 years, 37 of which have been with Lindenwood. He was an adjunct faculty member for his first nine years at Lindenwood, as he also worked as a union carpenter building house.

Throughout his teaching career at Lindenwood, some of Professor Hargate’s favorite memories include employee Christmas parties, biannual trips to Italy with Dr. James Hutson (also of the School of Arts, Media, and Communications) and students, midnight breakfasts during finals week, graduation, and alumni contacting him to talk about their successes.

Congratulations to Professor Hargate!
