Course Description

In workshops, fiction writers often focus on the short-story form; however, nearly all fiction writers aspire to be novelists. The leap from story writing to novel writing can be daunting. The focus of this course is literature that falls into that gray area between the typical short story and novel: the long story and the novella (which can be interchangeable terms). We will read eight works of fiction, with a particular emphasis on studying the elements in these shorter works that we normally associate with full-blown novels. While length is most readily identified as the chief difference between short stories and novels, in this course we will see that there is much more to it than mere word count—and in so doing hopefully facilitate the tricky transition from short-form to long-form writer.
