Course Description

Scenes of startling physical transformation have always fascinated poets and other artists. Using the “transformation song” from classical Thai drama as our starting point, in this course we’ll survey iconic scenes of shapeshifting from the world of myth and fable, as well as contemporary responses to them. Among other topics, we’ll consider how the mythic can add nuance and dimension to our poems. We’ll consider how to stage a poem as a theatrical piece. Finally, we’ll write back to these traditions with an original piece of “transformation.”
