Every semester is a fresh start. Whether you’re stepping onto campus for the first time or returning for another year, the beginning of a new semester is the perfect opportunity to build habits that will help you succeed academically, professionally, and personally.
Beyond attending class, college is about finding your community, asking for help when you need it, and taking advantage of the resources that are already here to support you. Here are a few simple ways to make this your best semester yet.
1. Get Involved Early
One of the easiest ways to feel at home on campus is by getting involved.
With more than 60 student organizations, leadership opportunities, fraternity and sorority life, and campus events throughout the year, there’s something for nearly every interest. Students who connect with organizations often build friendships faster, develop leadership skills, and create memories that last well beyond graduation.
Not sure where to start? Attend events during Lindenwood’s Week of Welcome, stop by Involvapalooza, or check out Campus Activities Board (CAB) events to meet other students in a relaxed environment.
2. Don’t Wait Until You Need Help
Successful students aren’t the ones who never struggle—they’re the ones who know where to go when they do.
If you’re finding a class challenging, take advantage of Lindenwood’s academic support services early. Tutoring, the Writing Center, the Math Success Center, and Student Academic and Support Services (SASS) are available to help you stay on track before small challenges become bigger ones. First-year students also have access to programs designed to make the transition to college smoother.
Asking for help is one of the smartest things you can do.
3. Make Campus Feel Like Home
College can feel overwhelming when your schedule revolves around class and homework.
Take time to enjoy the spaces around campus. Visit the Center for Campus Community & Connection to study between classes, attend events, connect with other students, or simply take a break. The Center also serves as a hub for resources and helps connect students with services across campus.
Sometimes the best productivity boost comes from stepping away from your laptop for a little while.
4. Put Important Dates on Your Calendar
The first few weeks of the semester move quickly.
Add important dates to your calendar now, including:
- Welcome Home Weekend
- First Day of Classes
- Week of Welcome
- Involvapalooza
- Homecoming & Family/Friends Weekend
- Registration deadlines
- Midterms and finals
Planning ahead helps reduce stress and makes it easier to balance academics, work, extracurriculars, and personal time.
5. Take Care of Your Mental Health
Success isn’t measured only by grades.
Your physical and mental well-being are just as important as your coursework. Lindenwood offers free counseling services through the Student Counseling and Resource Center (SCRC), as well as access to Uwill, which provides virtual counseling and wellness resources for students. Services are confidential and included as part of your student experience.
Whether you’re dealing with stress, anxiety, homesickness, or simply need someone to talk to, support is available.
If you or someone you know needs immediate assistance, Public Safety is available on campus 24/7 at (636) 949-4911.
6. Build Relationships With Your Professors
Your instructors want to see you succeed.
Introduce yourself during the first week, attend office hours, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to seek clarification when something doesn’t make sense. Building these relationships can lead to mentorship opportunities, stronger classroom experiences, and valuable career advice.
7. Find a Routine That Works for You
No two college students have the same schedule.
Some people study best in the morning. Others are night owls. The key is finding a routine you can stick with.
Try to:
- Block out dedicated study time each week.
- Use a planner or digital calendar.
- Break larger assignments into smaller tasks.
- Get enough sleep and schedule time to recharge.
- Leave room for campus events and time with friends.
Consistency is often more valuable than perfection.
Make This Semester Count
College is about making progress, learning from challenges, and taking advantage of the opportunities around you. You don’t have to do everything perfectly the first time.
At Lindenwood, you’re surrounded by people who want to help you succeed. Whether that’s joining a student organization, meeting with a tutor, attending a campus event, or reaching out for support, every small step helps build a more successful and rewarding college experience.
Here’s to a semester filled with new connections, new accomplishments, and new opportunities.
Welcome back, Lions!
