Nearly 670 students took part in Lindenwood University’s first-ever December commencement ceremony on Friday, Dec. 13, at the Hyland Arena on the St. Charles campus. The total included approximately 370 undergraduate and 300 graduate students. Approximately 3,500 attended the ceremony—some watching on television from overflow seating in the Evans Commons.
The keynote speaker for the ceremony was Missouri Senator Tom Dempsey. Dempsey was elected to the Senate after winning a special election in 2007 and was re-elected in 2008 and 2012. He currently serves as Senate leader and is the only Missouri lawmaker to have served as both house majority floor leader and senate majority floor leader.
Dempsey is also the vice president of First National Bank of St. Louis and a member of the Greater St. Charles County Chamber of Commerce, the St. Charles Rotary Club, and St. Cletus Catholic Church.
Student speakers for the ceremony were Michael DeVault from the Lindenwood Online Program and Kayla Piers of daytime programs. In May, more than 1,500 students participated in Lindenwood’s graduate and undergraduate commencement exercises, which have been held since 2007 at the St. Charles Family Arena.
