More than 500 students from high schools and middle schools across the state will convene at Lindenwood University-Belleville on March 9 to compete in the Southern Illinois Regional Science Olympiad. This is the third year the university has hosted the event.
Science Olympiad holds about 300 regional tournaments across the United States each year. The competitions are run like an academic track meet with a series of 23 events in each division. Events are rotated in and out over the years to reflect changes in scientific research and to keep the event fresh.
The Illinois Science Olympiad is a non-profit organization devoted to improving the quality of science education, increasing student interest in science, and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science education by students and teachers, according to its website.
The 35th Annual Science Olympiad National Tournament will be May 31-June 1, at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY.
