Men's Soccer Team Earns Trip to National Tournament

Lindenwood University's men's soccer team has advanced to the NAIA National Tournament for the first time, defeating Park University 2-0 Saturday night in the Region V championship.

The Lions now travel to Albuquerque, N.M., for the 42nd annual NAIA men's soccer national championship. Lindenwood will play St. Gregory's (OK). The game is at 5 p.m. Friday (St. Louis time).

To earn the trip to Albuquerque, Coach Carl Hutter's Lions opened up a tight game with Park when freshman midfielder Branko Savic scored in the 27th minute. Nesa Stefanovic and Maxim Popov assisted on the goal.

The Lions struck again early in the 49th minute when Stefanovic collected a long pass from Jason Wyland and beat the Park goalkeeper to improve his single-season goal scoring record to 43 goals. Once again, Lindenwood was aided by outstanding goalkeeping from junior Ryan LeTulle, who had five saves.

Lindenwood improves its record to 20-3-1, establishing a new school record for the Lions and Coach Hutter, who has named to 2000 NAIA Region V Men's Soccer Coach of the Year.
