Historic, International Dances Featured in Spring Concert

The Lindenwood University Dancers present their Spring Concert on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, May 1, 2, and 3, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, May 4, at 2 p.m. in the Hyland Performance Arena on the Lindenwood University campus in St Charles, Mo.

Lindenwood’s award winning dancers perform jazz, tap, modern, and Panamanian inspired dance in original choreography by faculty and students.

Dances created in 1905 by the great choreographer, Isadora Duncan are a specialty of Dr. Alice Bloch. Lindenwood dancers will perform these historical recreations to the music of Chopin and Brahms. Bloch was inspired to set the dances by a picture of Lindenwood students from the 1920’s performing them on the college lawn.

The Feast of Corpus Christi led Panamanian graduate student, Monica Newsam and her sister, Gracelia, to choreograph “Travesia.” “Travesia,” or journey, tells of a soul discovering the devil within. The audience is transported into the realm of Panamanian myth through the medium of dance. It is based on a traditional folkloric dance that is still being done in Panama today.

Shih-Weh Wang blends modern dance, martial arts, and Chinese classical dance into “Revenge,” set to Chinese music. It tells the story of a daughter’s revenge for her father’s death. Matt Stumpt is assistant martial arts choreographer.

“Just Laugh,” by Silvia Barbagallo is a modern and jazz dance about learning to let go, to music by Wilson Picket. Caitlin McIntosh sets her dancers moving in a variety of styles to “Requiem for a Dream,” while Amy Ball’s “Controlled” explores how people affect each other’s self perception.

Carrie Nestor and Stephanie Hardy choreographed a light hearted tap dance to music including “Hocus Pocus” by Focus. The dating game is the subject of Lori Wahlberg and Jennifer Meilink’s “The Game” to a Prince mix. Becky Greifzu and Tamara Kellly have also choreographed jazz dances.

Performing are: Yilca Arosmena, Kari Baker, Amy Ball, Silvia Barbagallo, Marquita Bowers, Nicki Burkholder, Hsaio Chin Chang, Heather Cooley, Ashley Fannon, Becky Greifzu, Stephanie Hardy, Melissa Harris, Trevor Harrison, Meloney Jones, Jeff Koeller, Amy LaRue, Andi Legget, John Matheny, Caitlin McIntosh, Kelly McLaren, Jennifer Meilink, Stephanie Meredith, Monica Newsam, Carrie Nestor, Kelly Pierce, Anna Potts, Valencia Prentice, Stephanie Ray, Rusty Reeves, Stephani Scott, Danny Taylor, Carla Venne, Shih Weh Wang, and Michelle Wilson.
