Life and Legacy of Martin Luther King January 16

Lindenwood University’s Black Student Union will present “The Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.” at 3 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 16, in the Emerson Black Box Theater of the University’s J. Scheidegger Center for the Arts. The event is free and open to the public.

The program will feature a keynote presentation by Tyrone Flowers, motivational speaker and founder of Higher M-Pact, an organization dedicated to high-risk urban youth. He has more than 25 years of professional experience working with juvenile justice, community service, and state and federal government agencies.

Flowers’ personal experiences as a troubled youth and his own triumph over adversity led him to serve as a catalyst for change. Despite being paralyzed by gunfire two weeks before his high school graduation, he became the first person in his family to earn a college degree.

Flowers holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Missouri-Columbia and a juris doctorate from the institution’s School of Law. He has earned numerous awards, including the 2007 Celebration of African American History Month Award from President George W. Bush.

In addition to Flowers’ address, the Martin Luther King, Jr. program will also include student performances and musical selections from Lindenwood’s premier vocal group, Voices Only.

“This is an outstanding opportunity to revisit the legacy of Dr. King and its relevance today,” said Shane Williamson, EdD, associate professor of education and dean of First-Year Programs. “It’s going to be an uplifting celebration.”
