Lindenwood University Belleville this week will unveil its new fitness center, the newly completed first phase of a $1 million renovation of the Lynx Arena.
A grand opening for the fitness center, which is located on the lower level of the arena building, will be held Thursday. The facility is filled with top of the line workout equipment including free weights, treadmills and elliptical machines. Students and staff members can watch their favorite shows while they get in shape on a trio of flat screen televisions including a giant 50-inch model.
“This fitness center is a great amenity we are thrilled to be able to offer our students, faculty and staff,” said Lindenwood Vice President Jerry Bladdick, Chief Operating Officer of the school’s Belleville campus. “And it was something that fits in great with our renovation plans for the Lynx Arena.”
Basketball Coach Scott Spinner said work already is taking place on the next two stages of the arena renovation: The walls have been repainted and the basketball floor is being patched and refinished in the main gym annex. Meanwhile, work is expected to begin within the week in the main gym where the basketball floor will be sanded and refinished, the bleachers will be spruced up and a new scoreboard will be installed in anticipation of men’s and women’s volleyball games in September and men’s and women’s basketball games in November.
“The annex is going to be a great place where students and staff members can come to play a game of pick-up basketball,” Spinner said. “And the main gym is going to be a great place where people from the community can come to see some exciting basketball and volleyball games."
Other work done to the Lynx Arena includes tuckpointing inside and out, updating of the basement locker rooms and improving the restrooms.
“We wanted to keep the character of the building while making the improvements necessary to turn it into a first class university sports area,” Spinner said.
The fitness center is open seven days a week, from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Friday, 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free for students, faculty, and staff.
