Lindenwood GIS Wins Grant Third Year in a Row

The Esri Workshop Grant has been awarded to Lindenwood University GIS for the third year in a row, totaling $15,000 for this outreach effort that helps train educators how to utilize Geographic Information System (GIS) technologies in their classrooms. The $5,000 support grant is paid out mostly to K-12 educators in the form of stipends for participating in Teach MO Maps workshops held in the fall at Lindenwood.  These workshops are promoted, designed, and taught by Lindenwood geography professors. 

In order to apply for the Esri Workshop Grant, applicants must have completed the T3G (Teachers Teaching Teachers GIS) training that is conducted by Esri, as well as submit a presentation using the ArcGIS online software showing the educators Lindenwood has reached and those they wish to reach in the future.

Lastly, a document must be submitted that includes the budget for the grant monies and an instructional plan for the workshops. The grant application materials were assembled by Tara Vansell, grant prime author (GIS instructor/GIS Lab manger), and Dr. Sarah Coppersmith (geography adjunct), grant co-author and co-instructor.

The Lindenwood GIS Lab has been collaborating with departments across campus and with GIS professionals in the community since its inception four years ago. The recent GIS Day event at Lindenwood’s campus on April 2 was the fifth such event Lindenwood hosted on campus for the regional GIS professional community. The History program has incorporated the use of GIS tools into several of its classes. The Lost St. Charles project is one example of those efforts. Dr. Josh Neely and Dr. Gail Johnston in the Biology Department have been incorporating GIS assignments and projects into their classes for several years, including an ongoing tree survey on campus by Neely’s students. The Earth Sciences and Anthropology/Archaeology programs have also been large supporters of the GIS classes.
