The results from this spring’s statewide assessment exams for Missouri students show Gateway Science Academy, a charter school sponsored by Lindenwood University, being one of the top performers among charter schools in St. Louis.
The school, located in South St. Louis on Smiley Avenue, is among four of St. Louis’ 21 charter schools to exceed the state averages in English language arts, and it, along with its affiliated Gateway Science Academy High School, is among four charter schools to exceed the state average in mathematics.
Gateway Science Academy was launched in 2010 by a company called Concept Schools, which is based in Illinois and runs several schools in the Midwest. By law, a charter school must obtain the sponsorship of a university, which is responsible for monitoring the school and providing reports on its performance. Lindenwood’s sponsorship of Gateway Science Academy is run through the School of Education.
The sponsorship includes ensuring the schools are legally, fiscally, and academically sound, including teacher certification and special education support. In addition, Lindenwood provides faculty development support, support at the international education conference, library resources, and partnership with Lindenwood faculty in the School of Sciences for STEM education.
"The Lindenwood University School of Education is highly engaged with the Gateway Science Academy schools that we sponsor, attending school events, celebrating their successes, and constantly supporting staff and student needs,” said Dr. Cynthia Bice, dean of the School of Education. “We are truly proud of the work of so many individuals to create this successful partnership."
