School of Education - Student Teaching Application Process

Attention student teacher applicants: All student teaching applications are now completely electronic. Students will upload all components to the Foliotek database, and should visit the Education Office if a registration code is needed in order to activate an account.

The deadlines for submitting all student teacher applications are as follows:
August 31 for Spring Semester
January 31 for Fall Semester

Foliotek Registration information and codes can be found in the Education Office, Roemer 106.

Attention all student teachers: as of summer 2013, all student teacher applicants will be required to obtain a substitute certification as a part of their application. Please refer to item number 14 below for directions to obtain this certificate through Mo DESE.

Student Teaching Application Components:

  1. Student Teacher Candidate’s Information Template.

Please fill in the requested fields in the first item of the application components page in Foliotek.
  2. Student Teaching Application.

  3. Philosophy of Education

Write a personal statement reflecting your views on teaching and learning, your influences and inspirations, your strengths and attributes, and your plans to further your education. Keep this statement 1-2 pages in length.
  4. Signed Advising/Program Planning Sheet

Schedule an appointment with your academic advisor for verification of eligibility to student teach. Your education advisor will be checking for completion of coursework prior to student teaching as well as ensuring that you have successfully passed all education courses with a grade no lower than a "C" and that you have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above.
  5. Application for Degree Signed by Advisor – Xeroxed Copy

This document is required if you plan to graduate upon the conclusion of student teaching. This item is optional for MAT students. If you do no plan on graduating after student teaching, please include a note stating that a degree is not being pursued after student teaching at this time.
  6. Passing CBase/MoGEA Score Report – Undergraduates Only

  7. Passing Praxis II Score Report

  8. Negative TB Test Results

The TB test is valid for six months. Students may turn in the TB test when the application is due and the Placement office will send the date from the TB test to the school district of their choice. It will be at the discretion of the school district to determine whether or not they want the student teacher to get another TB test conducted prior to student teaching.

Students who pay a health fee through tuition may be eligible to receive free TB testing at Lindenwood’s Student Health Center. Call to determine eligibility: (636) 949-4804.

TB tests can be distributed through your doctor’s office or through any urgent care, walk-in clinic, or the St. Charles County Division of Public Health
  9. Signed Letters of Recommendation (2)

May range from academic, employment, and/or character references. Please include at least one recommendation from someone who has observed you in a school setting or leadership role.
  10. Missouri Highway Patrol Fingerprint

All student teacher applicants will be required to send fingerprints directly to DESE as of summer 2013 in accordance with new dissemination laws. Before sending fingerprints to DESE, the student will need to create an educator profile in DESE and apply for the substitute certificate.

Students must schedule an appointment to get fingerprints taken through the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Please refer to this link for fingerprint directions:  Follow the directions to have fingerprints sent directly to Mo DESE for the substitute certification. The code students will use is 2301. The cost of the fingerprint background check is $44.80. Prints are valid for one year and may need to be updated and re-sent to DESE in order to receive the initial professional certification (initial teacher certification) at the end of student teaching.
  11. Family Care Safety Background Clearance – Dated no earlier than one year prior to student teaching. Student receives results.

    Family Care Safety Registry

New applicants must pay a $10 processing fee.

If you are already on file with FCSR, simply call the number indicated on the website to request that an updated report be sent to the home address of the applicant.
  12. Travel Waiver - Sign and date the Travel Waiver, which states that Lindenwood University will not be held responsible for activities that require the student teacher to travel off campus.
  13. Missouri Educator Profile Results - Take the MEP assessment.

Students can only use Internet Explorer to access the website. Be prepared with a credit card that does not require a PIN number. The cost is $22.00 to take the assessment. It will take 45 minutes to an hour to complete and you will receive results immediately after completion in PDF format. Save the PDF file of your results to your Foliotek account (for your student teaching application) and/or your computer/flash drive if you do not yet have Foliotek. Please email your results to your advisor. A scheduled meeting will need to occur with your Education advisor prior to submission of the student teaching application to review and discuss your progress.
  14. Substitute Certificate - Students will apply for the substitute certification through Mo DESE’s website. Students will be required to upload their certificate to Foliotek as a part of their application. The certificate can be printed off from the user’s profile page under “certificate status.” Typical turn-around time for issuance of the certificate is one to two days upon receipt of fingerprints, official transcripts and submitting the application online. As of July 1, 2013, there will be a processing fee of $50 for the substitute applications.

In order to obtain the substitute certificate, the student teacher is responsible for (in order): 1. Applying online for the substitute certification (through DESE’s website); 2. Sending an official transcript verifying 60 college credits; 3. Sending fingerprints (see item number 10 for directions) directly to DESE by using code 2301.

Once the certificate has been issued, student will need to print off the page verifying the issuance of the certification under “Certificate Status” in their educator profile. This is a blue tab to the left-hand side of the profile. When it has been printed off, students will then upload this page to the Foliotek database.

To Submit Your Completed Student Teaching Application, students must upload all components to Foliotek. This is the only means by which the student teaching application will be reviewed and accepted.

Please be advised, there will be a mandatory student teaching informational meeting the semester prior to student teaching.
  • The mandatory informational meeting is typically scheduled in April for fall student teaching and November for spring student teaching. The date will be announced to student teaching applicants via e-mail.

The weekly accompanying Student Teaching Seminar classes are scheduled to begin on the main campus the first week of January for spring student teaching or the second week of August for fall student teaching, which is before Lindenwood’s semester typically begins.
  • Attendance of each seminar class is essential and mandatory.

"Teaching and Leading as an Art and a Science"
The School of Education agrees that the general outcome of the teacher education program must be teaching professionals that believe and implement teaching as a blend of “Art” and “Science” as represented by the Beauty and Mechanism of the Spellmann Clock Tower… Teaching as an art because teaching is a craft that must be learned and applied in an authentic environment. Teaching as a science because it must be influenced by research and best practice for optimal student learning to be achieved.
