Description of Study

To determine the extent to which different doses of an amino acid called beta-aminoisobutyric acid (BAIBA) enters your blood in comparison to a placebo.

Research Sample Needed

  • 10 healthy, physically active men

Inclusion Criteria

  • Between the ages of 18 – 45 years
  • Body mass index between 18.5 – 29.9 kg/m2. If participant has a body mass index above 30.0 kg/m2 they must have a body fat percentage below 25% to be included in the study.
  • Determined to be healthy through completion of a health history questionnaire.
  • Any eligible participant taking a branched-chain amino acid supplement must agree to stop taking it for 30 days prior to beginning study protocol.

Exclusion Criteria

  • Currently being treated by a physician for any disease or disorder that will compromise outcomes of the study
  • Fasting capillary blood glucose level > 100 mg/dL (1st occurrence: reschedule, 2nd occurrence: excluded)
  • Currently smoke or quit within the past six months
  • Consume any branched-chain amino acid supplements within the past 30 days.
  • Currently following a ketogenic or very-low carbohydrate diet.
